Conditional Sentences: Type 1, 2, and 3
Conditional sentences express that one action depends on another. They consist of an “if clause” (condition) and a “main clause” (result).
Type 0: General Truth
If + present simple, present simple. Ex: If you heat ice, it melts.
Type 1: Real Future Possibility
If + present simple, will + base verb. Ex: If it rains, I will stay home.
Type 2: Unreal Present
If + past simple, would + base verb. Ex: If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world.
Type 3: Unreal Past
If + past perfect, would have + past participle. Ex: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
