Subject-Verb Agreement: Rules and Exceptions
The verb must agree with its subject in number (singular/plural).
Basic Rules
- Singular subject → singular verb: The boy plays
- Plural subject → plural verb: The boys play
Special Cases
- Each/every + singular: Every student is here
- Neither/nor + singular: Neither John nor Mary is coming
- Either/or: verb agrees with nearest subject: Either the teacher or the students are wrong
- Collective nouns: The team is playing well (singular) / The team are arguing (plural)
- Indefinite pronouns (everyone, someone, nobody): singular verb

- Correct: The list of items are on the table. Everyone have finished. Neither the cat nor the dogs is sleeping.
