Conditional sentences are used to express real or unreal situations. They consist of two clauses: the if-clause (condition) and the main clause (result). In this lesson, we will study the three types of conditional sentences.
Type 1: Real Condition (Possible)
Used for situations that are possible or likely to happen in the present or future.
Form: If + present simple, will + base verb
Example: “If you study hard, you will pass the exam.”
Example: “If it rains, we will stay at home.”
Type 2: Unreal Condition (Impossible or Hypothetical)
Used for hypothetical or unreal situations in the present or future.
Form: If + past simple, would + base verb
Example: “If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world.”
Example: “If I were you, I would accept the offer.” (Note: “were” is used for all subjects)
Type 3: Unreal Condition in the Past (Regret)
Used for unreal situations in the past, often expressing regret or criticism.
Form: If + past perfect, would have + past participle
Example: “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.”
Example: “If she had left earlier, she would have caught the bus.”
Other Conditional Connectors
- Unless = if not. Example: “You won’t succeed unless you work hard.”
- Provided that / As long as. Example: “You can go provided that you finish your homework.”
- Even if. Example: “Even if it rains, we will go.”
- In case. Example: “Take an umbrella in case it rains.”
Mixed Conditionals
Sometimes we mix Type 2 and Type 3: “If I had taken that job (past), I would be rich now (present).”
Exercises
- Complete: “If I (have) more time, I (learn) to play the guitar.” (Type 2)
- Complete: “If she (not miss) the bus, she (arrive) on time.” (Type 3)
- Write one sentence for each type of conditional.
