Relative Clauses: Defining and Non-Defining

Relative clauses give more information about a noun.

Defining Relative Clauses

Essential to identify the noun. No commas. Example: “The student who studies hard will succeed.”

Non-Defining Relative Clauses

Extra information, between commas. Example: “My father, who is a doctor, works in Algiers.”

Relative Pronouns

Who (people, subject) – Which (things) – That (people/things) – Whose (possession).

Exercises

1. Join: “I have a friend. She speaks three languages.” 2. Add commas where needed.
