Debating Skills: How to Structure Arguments
Debate is a formal discussion where two sides argue for and against a topic.
Structure of a debate
- Opening statement: Present your team’s position.
- Arguments: Each speaker presents 1-2 arguments with evidence.
- Rebuttal: Respond to the opposing side’s arguments.
- Closing statement: Summarise your position.
Useful phrases
Presenting arguments: “Our first point is…” / “Another important factor is…”
Agreeing: “I agree with my opponent that…” / “That’s a valid point.”
Disagreeing: “I respectfully disagree because…” / “That argument is flawed because…”
Rebuttal: “While it’s true that…, it’s also important to consider…”
Concluding: “For these reasons, we strongly believe that…”
Debate format
Topic: “Should social media be banned for teenagers?”
- Team A (FOR): Arguments for banning.
- Team B (AGAINST): Arguments against banning.
- Each speaker: 2-3 minutes.
- Judges decide the winner based on arguments and presentation.
Exercise
Prepare arguments FOR and AGAINST the topic: “Should students wear school uniforms?” Write 3 arguments for each side.
