Possessive ‘s (Ownership)

We use ‘s to show that something belongs to someone.

Rules

• Singular noun + ‘s: Ali’s book, the cat’s tail, my mother’s car
• Plural noun ending in s + ‘: the students’ classroom, my parents’ house
• Irregular plural + ‘s: the children’s toys, the men’s room
• Two people: Sami and Ali’s room (they share it)

Examples

“This is Ahmed’s bag.” / “These are the girls’ uniforms.”

“My father’s car is blue.” / “The dog’s tail is short.”

Vs ‘is’ contraction

It’s = it is (It’s a book.) vs possessive (The cat’s toy)

Exercise

Rewrite using ‘s:

1. The book of the teacher. → The ___ book.
2. The bikes of the boys. → The ___ bikes.
3. The room of my brother. → My ___ room.
