Grammar: The Second Conditional

The second conditional is used to talk about unreal or imaginary situations in the present or future. These situations are impossible or unlikely.

Structure

If + Past Simple, Would + Base Verb

Examples:

• If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world.
• If I were you, I would study medicine.
• If she lived in Paris, she would visit the Eiffel Tower every day.

Usage

We use the second conditional for:

• Imaginary situations: If I were president, I would help the poor.
• Unreal possibilities: If I knew the answer, I would tell you.
• Advice: If I were you, I would see a doctor.

Important Notes

• Use WERE for all subjects in the if clause (I were, he were, she were).
• The if clause uses Past Simple, not would.
• Would can be contracted to ‘d: I would = I’d

Exercise 1: Complete with the correct form:
