Grammar: The First Conditional

The first conditional is used to talk about possible situations in the present or future. The condition is possible and the result is likely to happen.

Structure

If + Present Simple, Will + Base Verb

Examples:

• If it rains, I will stay at home.
• If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
• If she arrives early, we will start the meeting.

Usage

We use the first conditional for:

• Real possibilities: If I have money, I will buy a new phone.
• Promises: If you help me, I will help you.
• Warnings: If you don’t hurry, you will miss the bus.
• Results: If you heat ice, it melts. (zero conditional – general truth)

Important Notes

• The if clause uses Present Simple, NOT will.
• The main clause uses will + base verb.
• A comma is used when the if clause comes first.

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences with the correct form:
