Writing a Formal Letter
A formal letter follows a specific structure and uses formal language. It is used for official communication: job applications, complaints, requests, etc.
Structure of a Formal Letter
1- Your address (top right). 2- Date. 3- Recipient’s address (left side). 4- Subject line (Re:). 5- Salutation: Dear Sir/Madam, / Dear Mr. Smith, 6- Body: introduction (why you are writing), main content, conclusion. 7- Closing: Yours faithfully, (if salutation is ‘Dear Sir/Madam’) or Yours sincerely, (if name is used). 8- Signature and printed name.
Useful Phrases
I am writing to apply for… / I am writing to complain about… / I would like to request… I would be grateful if… I look forward to hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
Exercise
Write a formal letter of application for a summer job. Include your qualifications, experience, and availability.
