Wish and If Only
We use ‘wish’ and ‘if only’ to express regrets about the past, desires about the present, or wishes for the future. They express unreal situations.
Wish + Past Simple (Present Wishes)
Use: when we want a present situation to be different. I wish I were taller. (But I am not tall.) I wish I lived near the beach. (But I don’t.) If only I knew the answer. (But I don’t.)
Wish + Past Perfect (Past Regrets)
Use: to express regret about something that happened or didn’t happen in the past. I wish I had studied harder. (But I didn’t study.) If only I hadn’t said that. (But I said it.) She wishes she had taken the job. (But she didn’t.)
Wish + Would (Future Desires or Complaints)
Use: to express a desire for someone to change their behavior. I wish you would stop smoking. If only it would stop raining. I wish the neighbors would be quieter.
