Tenses Review: Present, Past and Future
Understanding English tenses is fundamental for effective communication. This lesson reviews the main tenses in English: present, past, and future, with a focus on their forms, uses, and signal words.
The Present Tenses
The Present Simple is used for habits, facts, and routines. Form: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he/she/it). Example: She studies English every day. Signal words: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day/week.
The Present Continuous is used for actions happening now or temporary situations. Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing. Example: The students are writing an essay now. Signal words: now, at the moment, today, this week, look!, listen!
The Past Tenses
The Past Simple is used for completed actions in the past. Form: Subject + past tense verb (regular: -ed / irregular). Example: They visited the museum yesterday. Signal words: yesterday, last week/month, in 2020, ago, then.
The Past Continuous is used for actions in progress at a specific time in the past. Form: Subject + was/were + verb-ing. Example: I was reading when you called. Signal words: while, when, as, at 5 o’clock yesterday.
The Present Perfect connects past to present. Form: Subject + have/has + past participle. Example: She has already finished her homework. Signal words: already, yet, just, ever, never, for, since.
The Future Tenses
Will + infinitive is used for predictions, promises, and spontaneous decisions. Example: I think it will rain tomorrow.
Going to is used for plans and intentions. Example: We are going to travel to Algiers next summer.
Present Continuous for future is used for fixed arrangements. Example: I am meeting my friend this evening.
