Present Simple: Formation, Usage and Exercises
The Present Simple is one of the most important tenses in English. It is used to express habits, general truths, and repeated actions.
1. Formation
Subject + verb (base form). For third person singular (he/she/it), add -s or -es.
- I/You/We/They play football.
- He/She/It plays football.
2. Spelling rules for he/she/it
- Add -s: play → plays, eat → eats.
- Add -es after -ch, -sh, -s, -x, -o: watch → watches, go → goes.
- Change -y to -ies: study → studies (but: play → plays).
3. Negative form
Subject + do/does + not + verb. I do not (don’t) like coffee. He does not (doesn’t) play tennis.
4. Question form
Do/Does + subject + verb? Do you like music? Does she speak English?
