Present Continuous: Formation, Usage and Exercises
The Present Continuous tense is used to describe actions happening at the moment of speaking or temporary situations.
1. Formation
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing. I am reading. He is playing. They are studying.
2. Spelling of -ing
- Most verbs: add -ing: play → playing.
- Verbs ending in -e: drop the -e: make → making.
- Short verbs (CVC): double consonant: run → running, swim → swimming.
3. Uses
- Action happening now: She is reading a book.
- Temporary situations: He is staying with his uncle.
- Future plans: We are visiting Algiers next week.
4. Exercises
- Listen! The baby (cry).
- They (play) football at the moment.
- She (not/study) now; she is sleeping.
