Present Continuous: Formation, Usage and Exercises

The Present Continuous tense is used to describe actions happening at the moment of speaking or temporary situations.

1. Formation

Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing. I am reading. He is playing. They are studying.

2. Spelling of -ing

• Most verbs: add -ing: play → playing.
• Verbs ending in -e: drop the -e: make → making.
• Short verbs (CVC): double consonant: run → running, swim → swimming.

3. Uses

• Action happening now: She is reading a book.
• Temporary situations: He is staying with his uncle.
• Future plans: We are visiting Algiers next week.

4. Exercises

1. Listen! The baby (cry).
2. They (play) football at the moment.
3. She (not/study) now; she is sleeping.
