Future with Will and Going To
English has two main ways to express the future: will and going to.
1. Will + base verb
Subject + will + base verb. I will help you. Negative: won’t (will not). Questions: Will + subject?
Uses: Predictions (It will rain), promises (I will call you), spontaneous decisions (I’ll take this one).
2. Be going to + base verb
Subject + am/is/are + going to + verb. She is going to study medicine.
Uses: Intentions/plans (I’m going to travel), predictions with evidence (Look at the clouds! It’s going to rain).
3. Difference between Will and Going To
- Will: spontaneous decision, promise, prediction without evidence.
- Going to: planned intention, prediction with evidence.
4. Exercises
- I forgot my wallet. I _____ (go) back home.
- She studied hard. She _____ (pass) the exam.
- _____ you _____ (help) me, please?
