Expressing Preference
We express preferences using several structures. Would rather is used for specific situations, while prefer is for general preferences.
Would rather + base verb (specific choice): “I would rather stay home tonight.” “She would rather drink tea than coffee.”
Would rather + subject + past tense (different subject): “I would rather you didn’t smoke here.”
Prefer + noun / to + verb / verb-ing: “I prefer tea to coffee.” “I prefer to read books rather than watch TV.” “She prefers walking to running.”
Like … better (informal): “I like football better than basketball.”
Examples
- “I would rather go to the beach than stay home.”
- “He prefers studying in the morning.”
- “Would you rather have pizza or pasta?”
- “I prefer summer to winter.”

Exercise: Rewrite using the word in brackets: 1. I like tea more than coffee. (prefer) → 2. I want to stay home, not go out. (would rather) → 3. She likes cats more than dogs. (prefers) → 4. I want you to tell me the truth. (would rather) →
