Relative Clauses: Defining vs Non-defining

Relative clauses add extra information about a noun. There are two types: defining and non-defining.

1. Defining relative clauses

Essential information. Without it, the sentence is unclear.
The man who lives next door is a doctor. (Which man? The one who lives next door.)

2. Non-defining relative clauses

Extra information. Set off by commas.
My brother, who lives in London, is an engineer.

3. Relative pronouns

who (people), which (things), that (people/things, defining only), whose (possession), where (places).
