The Imperative

Used for commands, instructions, suggestions, and requests.

Affirmative imperative

Base verb (no subject).

• Open the door.
• Listen carefully.
• Write your name here.
• Be quiet, please.

Negative imperative

Don’t + base verb.

• Don’t run in the hallway.
• Don’t be late.
• Don’t forget your homework.

Uses

• Instructions: Mix the ingredients.
• Directions: Turn left at the corner.
• Warnings: Be careful!
• Advice: Eat healthy food.

Exercises

1. Change to imperative: (You must arrive on time. -> Arrive on time.)
2. Make these negative: (Open the window. Talk loudly.)
