Third Conditional: If + Past Perfect, Would Have

The third conditional expresses unreal situations in the past — things that didn’t happen.

1. Structure

If + past perfect, would have + past participle.
If I had studied, I would have passed the exam.

2. Meaning

Talking about impossible past situations.
If she had left earlier, she wouldn’t have missed the bus.

3. Contractions

If I’d known, I’d have come. If you’d asked, I’d have helped.

Exercises

Complete: If I … (know), I … (come). If we … (leave) earlier, we … (arrive) on time.
