The Past Simple: Regular and Irregular Verbs
This lesson teaches the Past Simple tense with regular and irregular verbs, a fundamental tense for narrating past events.
Formation of Regular Verbs
Regular verbs: Verb + ed
- Walk → walked, Play → played, Study → studied, Stop → stopped
Ex: “I walked to school yesterday.”
Irregular Verbs
Irregular verbs have special forms that must be memorized.
- Go → went, Eat → ate, See → saw, Buy → bought, Take → took
Ex: “She went to the market.” / “They ate lunch.”
Negative Form
Subject + did not (didn t) + base verb
Ex: “I didn t go to school.” / “She didn t eat breakfast.”
Exercises
Change to past simple: “I (go) to the cinema yesterday.” → “I ______ to the cinema.”
