Adverbs: Types, Formation and Position
In this lesson, we study adverbs in English for 1st Year Secondary School (Literary Stream). Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs to provide more information.
Types of Adverbs
- Adverbs of manner: quickly, slowly, carefully, well (how something happens)
- Adverbs of time: now, yesterday, soon, always (when something happens)
- Adverbs of place: here, there, everywhere, inside (where something happens)
- Adverbs of frequency: always, often, sometimes, never (how often)
- Adverbs of degree: very, quite, almost, too (to what extent)
Formation of Adverbs
Most adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives:
quick → quickly, careful → carefully, happy → happily
Irregular adverbs: good → well, fast → fast, hard → hard, early → early
Position of Adverbs
- Adverbs of manner: at the end of the sentence (She sings beautifully.)
- Adverbs of frequency: before the main verb (She always arrives early.)
- Adverbs of place: at the end (The book is here.)
Exercises
Exercise 1: Form adverbs from these adjectives: (easy, careful, quick, happy, good)
Exercise 2: Put the adverb in the correct position:
1. She goes to the gym. (often)
2. He drives. (carefully)
