The Present Perfect: Formation and Use
In this lesson, we will study the Present Perfect tense, an essential tense for 2nd year secondary school students in the Literary Stream. This lesson follows the Algerian curriculum.
Formation
The Present Perfect is formed with: Subject + have/has + past participle
- I/You/We/They have finished.
- He/She/It has arrived.
Uses of the Present Perfect
1. Past actions with present relevance: “I have lost my keys.” (I still don t have them)
2. Life experiences: “She has visited Paris.”
3. Actions that started in the past and continue: “We have lived here since 2010.”
4. Recent past actions: “He has just arrived.”
Signal words
- Ever: “Have you ever been to London?”
- Never: “I have never seen that film.”
- Just: “She has just left.”
- Already: “They have already finished.”
- Yet: “Have you done it yet?”
- Since / For: “Since 2020 / For three years”
Exercises
Exercise 1: Complete with the Present Perfect: “She ______ (visit) Algeria three times.”
Exercise 2: Choose the correct option: “I (have never been / never went) to France.”
