Past Continuous Tense: Formation and Usage

The Past Continuous tense (also called Past Progressive) is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. It is formed using the past tense of the verb “to be” (was/were) followed by the present participle (-ing form) of the main verb.

Formation

Affirmative: Subject + was/were + verb(-ing) + complement
Example: I was reading a book when you called.

Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb(-ing) + complement
Example: They were not (werent) playing football yesterday.

Interrogative: Was/Were + subject + verb(-ing) + complement?
Example: Was she studying at 8 PM last night?

Uses of Past Continuous

• Action in progress at a specific past time: At 7 oclock yesterday evening, I was watching TV.
• Two simultaneous past actions: While my mother was cooking, my father was reading the newspaper.
• Interrupted past action: I was walking to school when it started raining.
• Background action in stories: The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
• Polite requests: I was wondering if you could help me.

Signal Words

Common signal words and phrases used with the Past Continuous include: while, when, as, at that moment, at (specific time) yesterday/last night, all day yesterday, throughout the evening.

Examples

Example 1: While Ahmed was doing his homework, his brother was playing video games. (Two simultaneous actions)

Example 2: The students were listening to the teacher when the fire alarm rang. (Interrupted action)

Example 3: At 9 PM last night, we were having dinner at a restaurant. (Action in progress at a specific time)

Example 4: The children were not sleeping when their parents arrived home. (Negative form)

Example 5: What were you doing when I called you this morning? (Interrogative form)
