Relative Pronouns: Who, Whom, Which, That, Whose

Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses, which provide additional information about a noun in the main clause.

Who/Whom

Who for people as subject: The man who called is my uncle. Whom for people as object (formal): The woman whom I met is a doctor.

Which

Which for things and animals: The book which I bought is interesting.

That

That for people and things in defining clauses: The car that I bought is red.

Whose

Whose for possession: The student whose father is a doctor studies hard.

Defining vs Non-defining

Defining: The man who lives next door is friendly. Non-defining: My father, who is 60, still works.

Exercices

1. Fill in: The woman ___ lives here is kind. The car ___ I bought is new.

2. Join: I know a man. He speaks five languages.
