The Present Perfect Tense: Formation and Uses
The Present Perfect is a crucial tense in English that connects past actions with the present moment. It is used to describe experiences, changes, and unfinished actions that have relevance now.
Formation
The Present Perfect is formed with: Subject + have/has + past participle. Affirmative: “I have visited Paris.” Negative: “She has not (hasn’t) finished her homework.” Interrogative: “Have you seen that film?” Short answers: “Yes, I have.” / “No, I haven’t.” For he/she/it, use “has”. Regular past participles end in -ed (played, worked, studied). Irregular verbs have special forms: go/went/gone, see/saw/seen, write/wrote/written, eat/ate/eaten, speak/spoke/spoken.
Main Uses
Four main uses: Life experiences (with ever/never, without specific time): “I have travelled to Japan.” “Have you ever eaten sushi?” Past actions with present results: “She has broken her leg (now she can’t walk).” Unfinished actions with since/for: “I have lived here since 2010 / for ten years.” Recent past (with just, already, yet): “He has just left.” “Have you finished yet?” “I have already eaten.”
Time Expressions
Key time expressions: ever, never, just, already, yet, recently, lately, so far, up to now, since, for, this week/month/year, today. DO NOT use specific past time expressions (yesterday, last week, in 2010, when I was young) — use Past Simple instead. “I saw him yesterday” (not “I have seen him yesterday”).
Examples
- Experience: “Have you ever visited the Sahara desert?”
- Result: “I have lost my keys, so I can’t open the door.”
- Unfinished action: “She has studied English for three years now.”
- Recent past: “The train has just arrived at the station.”
