Expressing Similarity and Difference: Like, As, Similar to, Different from

In English, we often need to compare things, people, or ideas to show how they are similar or different. This lesson will teach you how to express similarity and difference correctly and effectively.

1. Expressing Similarity

Using “Like”

Like is a preposition used before a noun or pronoun to show similarity. It means “similar to” or “in the same way as”.

  • Ahmed is like his father. (they are similar)
  • This flower smells like a rose.
  • She sings like a professional singer.
  • It looks like it will rain today.

Using “As”

As is a conjunction used before a clause (subject + verb) or as a preposition meaning “in the role of”.

  • He works as a teacher. (in the role of a teacher)
  • Do as I say, not as I do.
  • She sings as her mother did when she was young.

Important distinction: Like vs As

  • Like + noun/pronoun: “He runs like a cheetah.” (comparing to a cheetah)
  • As + subject + verb: “He runs as a cheetah does.” (comparing actions)
  • As + noun (role): “He works as a doctor.” (his profession)

Using “Similar to” and “The same as”

  • My bag is similar to yours.
  • Your opinion is similar to mine.
  • Her dress is the same as her sister’s dress.
  • This phone is the same as that one.

Other expressions of similarity

  • Both…and: Both Ahmed and Karim are good students.
  • Just like: She is just like her mother.
  • As…as: He is as tall as his brother.
  • Similarly, Likewise: (used to connect ideas) “Cats are independent. Similarly, tigers do not need much company.”

2. Expressing Difference

Using “Different from”

Different from is the most common way to express difference. Different than is used more in American English.

  • Arabic is different from English.
  • My opinion is different from yours.
  • This book is very different from the movie.

Using “Unlike”

Unlike means “different from” and is used before a noun or pronoun.

  • Unlike his brother, Karim likes sports.
  • Unlike French, Arabic is written from right to left.
  • She is unlike anyone I have ever met.

Using “Difference” and “Different”

  • There is a big difference between summer and winter.
  • Can you tell the difference between these two pictures?
  • They have different opinions about the movie.
  • We go to different schools.

Using “Not as…as”

  • This test is not as difficult as the previous one.
  • He is not as tall as his friend.
  • My house is not as big as yours.

Comparison Table: Similarity vs Difference

Similar to Almost the same Your shoes are similar to mine.
The same as Identical My answer is the same as yours.
Different from Not the same This color is different from that one.

Exercise 1: Fill in the blanks with “like” or “as”:

  3. She runs as fast as her brother. (not as…as – negative) → ________________
  4. In contrast to winter, summer is very hot. (Unlike) → ________________
