Active and Passive Participles Formation
Participles are derived nouns that indicate the doer or receiver of an action.
Active Participle
Indicates who performs the action. Formed from three-letter roots on the pattern faa il. Example: writer from wrote. From non-three-letter: following the present tense with a instead of the prefix. Example: respectful.
Passive Participle
Indicates who receives the action. From three-letter roots on the pattern maf ool. Example: written. From non-three-letter: following the present tense passive.
Grammatical Usage
They function as nouns and can be used as adjectives or in predicate position.
