Linking Words: And, But, Or, Because, So, Although

Linking words connect ideas, sentences, and paragraphs. They make your writing and speaking more coherent.

Addition: And

I like reading and writing.

Contrast: But / Although

He is rich but unhappy. Although it was raining, we went out.

Choice: Or

Do you want tea or coffee?

Reason: Because

I stayed home because I was sick.

Result: So

It was raining, so we stayed inside.

1. Complete: (a) I like apples ___ oranges. (b) She went to bed early ___ she was sleepy.

2. Write two sentences using “although” and “because”.
