Writing: The Argumentative Essay
The argumentative essay is one of the most common writing tasks in the BAC exam. You must present a clear argument, support it with evidence, and address counterarguments.
Structure of an Argumentative Essay:
Introduction: Hook the reader, introduce the topic, state your thesis (main argument).
Body Paragraph 1: First argument with supporting evidence and examples.
Body Paragraph 2: Second argument with supporting evidence and examples.
Body Paragraph 3 (optional): Address a counterargument and refute it.
Conclusion: Restate thesis, summarise main points, end with a strong closing statement.
Useful Phrases for Argumentative Essays:
- Introducing your opinion: In my opinion/view, I believe that, It seems to me that, From my perspective, I am convinced that.
- Presenting arguments: First of all, To begin with, Furthermore, Moreover, In addition, Another key point is.
- Giving examples: For instance, For example, Such as, As evidence, To illustrate this point.
- Showing contrast: However, On the other hand, Nevertheless, Although, In contrast, While it is true that.
- Concluding: In conclusion, To sum up, All things considered, Ultimately, Therefore, As a result.

“Some people believe that technology makes our lives better, while others think it creates more problems. Discuss both views and give your opinion.”
