Pronunciation: Silent Letters and Word Stress

English pronunciation can be challenging due to silent letters and unpredictable stress patterns. Useful for BAC oral and written exams.

Silent Letters:

b: debt, doubt, comb, thumb.
k: know, knee, knife, knock.
w: write, wrong, answer, sword.
gh: night, light, daughter (silent after i).
h: hour, honest, honour, what, where.
l: half, calf, talk, walk, could, would.

Word Stress Patterns:

Two-syllable nouns: stress on first syllable (TAble, PRESent, RECord).
Two-syllable verbs: stress on second syllable (deCIDE, preSENT, reCORD).
Words ending in -tion/sion: stress on penultimate syllable (eduCAtion, teleVIsion).
Words ending in -ic: stress on syllable before -ic (acaDEMic, eLECtric).
