Introduction
In this lesson, we will study time expressions: days, months, seasons and dates, according to the Algerian curriculum for 1st Year Middle School. Time expressions are essential for daily communication. They help you talk about when things happen, make plans, and describe your daily routine. This lesson will teach you the days of the week, months of the year, seasons, and how to say dates in English. Mastering time expressions is a fundamental step in learning English.
Main Concepts
Days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Note: Days are always capitalized in English. We use “on” before days: on Monday, on Friday. Example: “I go to school on Monday.” Months of the year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December. Months are also capitalized. We use “in” before months: in January, in July. Example: “My birthday is in May.” Seasons: spring, summer, autumn (or fall), winter. We use “in” before seasons: in spring, in winter. Example: “It is hot in summer.”
Dates: In English, we write dates in two ways: British English: day + month + year (e.g., 5 July 2026). American English: month + day + year (e.g., July 5, 2026). We use ordinal numbers for days: first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), fourth (4th), fifth (5th), etc. Example: “July 5th, 2026” is read as “July fifth, twenty twenty-six” or “the fifth of July, twenty twenty-six.” Years: 2026 = twenty twenty-six, 2000 = two thousand, 1998 = nineteen ninety-eight. Important prepositions: “on” for days and dates (on Monday, on July 5th), “in” for months, years, and seasons (in May, in 2026, in summer), “at” for specific times (at 5 o’clock, at noon).
