Expressing Wishes and Regrets: I wish, If only
Expressing wishes and regrets is frequently tested in BAC exams through transformation exercises.
Wishes about the Present:
Use: I wish / If only + past simple. “I wish I knew the answer.” / “If only I had more time.” / “She wishes she were taller.”
Wishes about the Past (Regrets):
Use: I wish / If only + past perfect. “I wish I had studied harder.” / “If only I had listened to your advice.” / “She wishes she hadn’t said that.”
Wishes about the Future:
Use: I wish + would + infinitive. “I wish you would stop interrupting.” / “I wish it would stop raining.”
