Present Simple vs Present Continuous
Present Simple:
Form: Subject + V1 (s/es for 3rd person)
Uses:
- Habits and routines: “I wake up at 6 am every day.”
- General truths: “Water boils at 100°C.”
- Permanent situations: “She lives in Algiers.”
- Scheduled events: “The train leaves at 5 pm.”
Present Continuous:
Form: Subject + am/is/are + V-ing
Uses:
- Actions happening now: “I am studying English.”
- Temporary situations: “He is staying with his uncle.”
- Planned future: “We are visiting the museum tomorrow.”
- Changing situations: “The climate is getting warmer.”
Exercice BAC 2019:
Complete with the correct tense:
“She usually (wake up) at 7, but today she (sleep) late.”
→ wakes up; is sleeping
“Water (freeze) at 0°C and it (boil) at 100°C.”
→ freezes; boils
“Look! The children (play) in the garden.”
→ are playing
“The train (arrive) at 8 pm tomorrow.”
→ arrives
Stative verbs:
Some verbs are not used in continuous forms: know, believe, love, hate, want, need, understand, belong, etc.
Correct: “I understand the lesson.”
Incorrect: “I am understanding the lesson.”
