Used To and Would — Past Habits
Used to and would are used to talk about past habits and states that are no longer true.
Used to (for habits and states)
- Affirmative: I used to play football every weekend. (I don’t anymore)
- Negative: I didn’t use to like vegetables. (Now I do)
- Question: Did you use to live in Algiers?
Would (for habits only — not states)
- Every summer, we would go to the beach.
- She would always help her mother in the kitchen.
Difference between Used to and Would
- Used to can describe both habits and states: I used to have a dog. (state) ✓
- Would can only describe habits (actions): I would have a dog. ✗
