Be Used To and Get Used To
These expressions are often confused with used to for past habits. They have different meanings.
Be used to + noun/gerund
Be accustomed to something. It describes a state of being familiar with something.
- I am used to getting up early. (It’s normal for me now.)
- She is used to the cold weather. (She doesn’t mind it.)
Get used to + noun/gerund
Become accustomed to something. It describes the process of adaptation.
- I am getting used to my new school. (It’s becoming familiar.)
- He will get used to driving on the left. (He will adapt.)
Comparison
- Used to: I used to live in London. (Past habit — now I don’t)
- Be used to: I am used to living in London. (I find it normal)
- Get used to: I am getting used to living in London. (I’m adapting)
