Phrasal Verbs
A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb + preposition/adverb that creates a new meaning.
Common phrasal verbs
- Get up: Rise from bed. I get up at 7 am.
- Turn on/off: Start/stop a device. Please turn off the lights.
- Look for: Search. I am looking for my keys.
- Look after: Take care of. She looks after her younger brother.
- Put on: Wear. Put on your coat, it’s cold.
- Take off: Remove. Take off your shoes.
- Come back: Return. When will you come back?
- Go out: Leave home. Let’s go out tonight.
Separable vs Inseparable
- Separable: Turn the light on / Turn on the light / Turn it on.
- Inseparable: Look after the baby / Look after her (NOT Look the baby after).
Exercises
