Giving Opinions

Expressing your opinion is an important skill in English. There are different ways to say what you think and to agree or disagree with others.

Expressing Your Opinion

Expression	Example
In my opinion, …	In my opinion, reading is very important.
I think (that) …	I think that we should study harder.
I believe (that) …	I believe that honesty is the best policy.
From my point of view, …	From my point of view, this book is excellent.
As far as I’m concerned, …	As far as I’m concerned, sport is essential.
I feel (that) …	I feel that we need more time.
Personally, …	Personally, I prefer summer to winter.

Agreeing

• I agree. / I agree with you.
• You’re right. — You’re right about that.
• That’s true. — That’s true, I hadn’t thought of that.
• Exactly! — Exactly! That’s what I think.
• I think so too. — I think so too.
• Definitely! — Definitely! That’s a good point.

Disagreeing (politely)

• I don’t agree. / I disagree.
• I’m not sure about that.
• I see your point, but… — I see your point, but I think differently.
• I’m sorry, but I disagree.
• That’s not how I see it.
• I don’t think so.

Example Dialogue

A: In my opinion, homework is very important for students.

B: I agree. It helps us practice what we learned.

A: I also think that teachers should give less homework on weekends.

B: I see your point, but I disagree. Weekends give us more time to study.

A: That’s true. Maybe we just need to organize our time better.
