Reported Speech: Statements, Questions, and Commands

Reported speech is used to report what someone said without quoting their exact words.

Changes:

Tense backshift: Present → Past, Past → Past Perfect, Will → Would, Can → Could.

Time/place: Now → Then, Today → That day, Tomorrow → The next day.

Reporting Questions:

Wh-questions: Keep the question word. “Where do you live?” → He asked me where I lived.

Yes/No questions: Use ‘if’. “Are you happy?” → He asked if I was happy.

Reporting Commands:

“Sit down!” → He told me to sit down.

BAC Exercises:

Rewrite: “I will call you tomorrow,” she said. → She said she would call me the next day.
