Lesson Explanation
1. Formation
The Present Perfect is formed with: Subject + have/has + past participle
- I/You/We/They have + past participle
- He/She/It has + past participle
Examples:
- I have visited Algiers. (زرت الجزائر العاصمة)
- She has finished her homework. (أنهت واجبها)
Negative: Subject + haven’t/hasn’t + past participle
- They haven’t arrived yet.
Questions: Have/Has + subject + past participle?
- Have you ever been to Timgad?
2. Uses of Present Perfect
Use 1: Past experiences (no specific time)
- I have visited the Casbah. (تجربة في الماضي غير محددة بزمن)
- She has eaten couscous. (جربت الكسكس)
Use 2: Past actions with present result
- He has broken his leg. (result: he can’t walk now)
- I have lost my keys. (result: I can’t open the door)
Use 3: Actions that started in the past and continue
- We have lived in Algeria since 2010.
- She has studied English for three years.
3. Time Expressions
- Ever — في أي وقت (questions only) — Have you ever seen the Sahara?
- Never — لم يحدث أبداً — I have never been to Paris.
- Already — بالفعل (positive) — She has already finished.
- Yet — حتى الآن (negative/questions) — Have you done it yet?
- Just — للتو — He has just left.
- For — لمدة (duration) — for two years
- Since — منذ (starting point) — since Monday

Exercise 2: Choose the correct tense
1. I __________ (visited / have visited) the Bardo Museum yesterday. Answer: visited (yesterday = specific time)
2. She __________ (never tried / never try) Chakhchoukha. Answer: has never tried
3. We __________ (have studied / studied) English for 5 years. Answer: have studied (for 5 years = duration continuing)
Exercise 3: BAC-style writing task
Write a short paragraph (60-80 words) about what you have done this week. Use Present Perfect at least 3 times.
Model answer: This week has been very productive. I have finished all my homework and I have read an interesting book about Algerian history. I have also visited my grandparents. However, I haven’t played football yet. My brother has bought a new video game and we have played it together.
Summary
The Present Perfect connects the past to the present. Remember: have/has + past participle. Use it for experiences, recent changes, and continuing situations. Practice regularly and it will become natural!
