Introduction
In English, we use different expressions to talk about wishes, desires, and preferences. The most common ones are “would like”, “want”, and “would prefer”. This lesson explains how to use each one correctly.

1. Would like
“Would like” is used to express a wish or desire politely. It is followed by an infinitive (to + verb) or a noun.

- I would like some water, please.

2. Want
“Want” is used to express a desire or need. It is less formal than “would like”.
Structure

Note: In the third person singular (he/she/it), we add -s to “want” → wants.
3. Would prefer
“Would prefer” is used to express a preference between two or more options.
Structure
