Baccalaureate Exam 2026 – English Language – Literature and Philosophy Stream

Duration: 3 hours – Coefficient: 3 – Stream: Literature and Philosophy

Part One: Reading Comprehension (12 points)

Read the text carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Education is universally recognized as a fundamental human right and a powerful driver of social and economic development. In the 21st century, the importance of quality education has become even more critical as societies face rapid technological changes, global challenges, and evolving job markets. According to UNESCO, over 260 million children worldwide are still out of school, and many more who are in school are not acquiring basic skills in literacy and numeracy.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and deepened existing inequalities in education systems around the world. School closures affected over 1.6 billion learners globally, with disadvantaged students suffering the most due to lack of access to digital learning resources. This “digital divide” has become one of the most pressing challenges in modern education, as countries strive to ensure that all students have equal access to quality learning opportunities regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Innovative approaches such as blended learning, project-based education, and the integration of technology in classrooms offer new possibilities for improving educational outcomes. However, experts emphasize that technology alone is not a solution. Well-trained teachers, adequate infrastructure, and inclusive policies remain essential for creating effective learning environments. The goal of inclusive and equitable quality education for all, as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 4, requires sustained commitment and investment from governments, communities, and international organizations.

Sample Essay (Topic 1)

Nelson Mandela’s famous statement that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” resonates deeply in today’s interconnected world. I strongly agree with this view, as education equips individuals with knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the ability to understand and solve complex problems.

Throughout history, education has been a catalyst for social change. It empowered movements for civil rights, gender equality, and economic development. When people are educated, they are better able to participate in democratic processes, make informed decisions about their health and well-being, and contribute to their communities. Education breaks the cycle of poverty by opening doors to better employment opportunities and higher incomes.

In my own experience, education has broadened my horizons and helped me understand different cultures and perspectives. It has given me the tools to question assumptions, analyze information critically, and express my ideas effectively. Without education, I would not have the same opportunities to pursue my goals and contribute to society.

In conclusion, education remains the most powerful tool for individual and societal transformation. Investing in quality education for all is not just a moral imperative but also the most effective strategy for building a more just, peaceful, and prosperous world.
