Learning Objectives:

• Understand the formation of the Past Perfect tense (Had + Past Participle)
• Know when to use the Past Perfect (before another past action)
• Be able to use the Past Perfect in BAC-style exercises

Lesson:

1. Formation (التكوين):

Affirmative (مثبت): Subject + had + Past Participle (V3)

• I had finished my homework before dinner.
• She had already left when I arrived.
• They had eaten lunch before we came.

Negative (منفي): Subject + had not (hadn’t) + Past Participle

• I hadn’t finished my homework yet.
• He hadn’t seen that film before.

Question (سؤال): Had + Subject + Past Participle?

• Had you finished your homework?
• Had she visited Paris before?

2. Uses (الاستخدامات):

a) للتعبير عن حدث وقع قبل حدث آخر في الماضي:

نستخدم Past Perfect للحدث الأقدم و Past Simple للحدث الأحدث.

• When I arrived (حدث أحدث), the train had already left (حدث أقدم).
• She had studied English before she moved to London.

b) مع already, just, never, ever, yet, by the time, before, after:

• By the time we reached the cinema, the film had already started.
• She had never been to the beach before last summer.
• He had just finished his breakfast when the phone rang.

c) في أسلوب الكلام المنقول (Reported Speech):

• Direct: He said, “I saw the film.”
• Reported: He said that he had seen the film.

3. Comparison: Past Simple vs Past Perfect:

Past Simple	Past Perfect
I arrived at 8 PM.	I had arrived before she called.
She did her homework.	She had done her homework when I arrived.
حدث في الماضي (ترتيب زمني)	حدث أقدم من حدث آخر في الماضي

BAC-Style Exercises:

Exercise 1: Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Simple or Past Perfect:

1. When we got to the station, the train (already/leave). -> had already left
2. She (finish) her work before she went out. -> had finished
3. He (not/eat) anything before the exam. -> hadn’t eaten
4. After they (complete) the project, they presented it. -> had completed
5. By the time I woke up, my mother (already/go) to work. -> had already gone

Exercise 2: Rewrite the sentences using the Past Perfect:

1. First she finished her studies. Then she got married. -> She had finished her studies before she got married.
2. First I did the shopping. Then I visited my grandmother. -> After I had done the shopping, I visited my grandmother.
3. He failed the exam because he didn’t study. -> He failed the exam because he hadn’t studied.

Exercise 3 (BAC style): Correct the verbs:

Last year, I (visit) London. Before that, I (never/be) abroad. I (book) my ticket a month before I (leave). By the time I (arrive), I (already/plan) my itinerary.

Answer: Last year, I visited London. Before that, I had never been abroad. I had booked my ticket a month before I left. By the time I arrived, I had already planned my itinerary.
