Lesson Objectives / أهداف الدرس
- Identify the four types of conditional sentences (0, 1, 2, 3)
- Form each conditional type correctly
- Use conditionals to express real and unreal situations
- Apply conditionals in BAC-style exercises
1. What are Conditional Sentences?
Conditional sentences express that one action depends on another. They contain two clauses:
- If-clause (condition / الشرط)
- Main clause (result / النتيجة)
2. Type 0: General Truth / الشرط الصفري (حقيقة عامة)
Structure: If + Present Simple, Present Simple
Use: Scientific facts and general truths / حقائق علمية
Examples:
- If you heat water to 100C, it boils.
- If it rains, the grass gets wet.
3. Type 1: Real Future / الشرط الأول (مستقبل محتمل)
Structure: If + Present Simple, Will + Verb (base)
Use: Possible future situations / مواقف محتملة في المستقبل
Examples:
- If you study, you will pass the exam.
- If it rains, we will stay home.
Signal words: unless, as long as, provided that, in case
4. Type 2: Unreal Present / الشرط الثاني (غير حقيقي في الحاضر)
Structure: If + Past Simple, Would + Verb (base)
Use: Hypothetical or imaginary situations / مواقف افتراضية
Examples:
- If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world.
- If I were you, I would accept the offer.
Note: "were" is used for all subjects in Type 2 (If I were, If he were…)
5. Type 3: Unreal Past / الشرط الثالث (غير حقيقي في الماضي)
Structure: If + Past Perfect, Would Have + Past Participle
Use: Impossible past situations (regret) / مواقف مستحيلة في الماضي (ندم)
Examples:
- If I had studied, I would have passed the exam. (But I didn’t study, so I failed.)
- If they had left earlier, they would have caught the bus.
6. Summary Table / جدول تلخيصي
| Type | If Clause | Main Clause | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Present Simple | Present Simple | General truth |
| 1 | Present Simple | Will + base verb | Real future |
