Relative pronouns (ضمائر الوصل) are used to connect a clause to a noun or pronoun, giving more information about it. They replace the noun they refer to.

| Who | For people (subject) | The man who is speaking is my teacher. |
| Whom | For people (object – formal) | The woman whom I met is a doctor. |
| Which | For things and animals | The book which is on the table is mine. |
| That | For people, things, animals (informal) | The car that I bought is red. |
| Whose | For possession (people and things) | The student whose father is a teacher is clever. |

Types of Relative Clauses:

1. Defining Relative Clauses (جمل الوصل المحددة):

These give essential information about the noun. Without them, the sentence loses meaning.

Example: The girl who lives next door is my friend.
\n
No commas are used.
\n\n
2. Non-Defining Relative Clauses (جمل الوصل غير المحددة):

These give extra information. The sentence still makes sense without them.
\n
Example: My mother, who is a teacher, works in Algiers.

Commas are used. “That” cannot be used here.
