I. Past Simple
Form:
- Regular verbs: verb + -ed (worked, played, studied)
- Irregular verbs: special 2nd form (went, ate, wrote, bought)
Negative: Subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb
Question: Did + Subject + base verb ?
Uses:
- Completed past actions: I visited my grandmother yesterday.
- Sequence of events: He woke up, had breakfast, and left for school.
- Past habits (with used to): I used to play football every day.
Signal words: yesterday, last night/week/year, ago, in 2020, then, first, finally
II. Past Continuous
Form: Subject + was/were + verb-ing
- I/He/She/It was working
- You/We/They were working
Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb-ing
Question: Was/Were + Subject + verb-ing ?
Uses:
- Action in progress at a specific past time: At 8 pm last night, I was studying.
- Background action: The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
- Interrupted action (with Past Simple): I was reading when the phone rang.
- Two simultaneous actions: While I was cooking, my brother was cleaning.

Common structure: While + Past Continuous, Past Simple
While I was walking to school, I saw an accident.
Common structure: Past Simple + when + Past Continuous

Exercise 1: Complete with Past Simple or Past Continuous.
a) I was watching (watch) TV when someone knocked (knock) on the door.
b) They played (play) football yesterday at 3 pm.
c) While she was studying (study), her brother was listening (listen) to music.
d) We visited (visit) the museum last Friday.
Exercise 2: Correct the mistakes.
a) I was go to the market when I was meeting Ali. → I was going to the market when I met Ali.
b) While he cooked dinner, the phone rang. → While he was cooking dinner, the phone rang.
Summary
- Past Simple = finished action at a specific past time
- Past Continuous = action in progress in the past
- Use “while” with Past Continuous and “when” with Past Simple
