Introduction

A school is like a small city. It has many different places where students learn, play, eat and study. In this lesson, we will learn the names of these places and how to describe them.

Vocabulary: School Places

Place What you do there Example sentence

Library Read books and study quietly The library is next to the canteen.
Playground Play and relax during break Students play football in the playground.
Canteen / Cafeteria Eat lunch and snacks We eat lunch in the canteen.

Describing your school

Adjectives for school places:

  • Size: big, small, large, tiny, huge
  • Appearance: clean, modern, old, beautiful, bright, dark
  • Atmosphere: quiet, noisy, calm, busy

Example Description

“My School” by Amira:

My school is big and modern. The classrooms are bright and clean. There is a large playground where we play football. The library is quiet and has many books. Our science laboratory is new and well-equipped. The canteen serves good food. I love my school!

Useful Expressions

  • The library is on the ground floor / first floor / second floor.
  • The computer room is next to / opposite / between the library and the staff room.
  • There is / are a big playground behind the school.
  • How many classrooms are there in your school? There are 20 classrooms.

Exercises

Homework

Write a short paragraph (6-8 sentences) describing your school. Use at least 5 vocabulary words from the lesson and 3 prepositions of place (next to, opposite, between, behind, etc.).
