A town or city has many different places. Here are some important ones: the school, the hospital, the police station, the fire station, the post office, the bank, the supermarket, the pharmacy, the library, the park, the restaurant, the cinema, the bus station, and the mosque.

To ask for directions, we start politely with ‘Excuse me.’ Then we ask: ‘How do I get to the hospital?’ or ‘Can you tell me the way to the library?’ or ‘Where is the nearest pharmacy, please?’

To give directions, use imperative verbs: ‘Go straight ahead.’ ‘Turn left.’ ‘Turn right.’ ‘Take the first street on the left.’ ‘Cross the road.’ ‘It is on your right.’ ‘You can’t miss it.’

To describe locations, use prepositions of place: ‘The school is next to the mosque.’ ‘The park is opposite the library.’ ‘The supermarket is between the bank and the pharmacy.’ ‘The hospital is near the bus station.’

Remember to be polite: always say ‘Excuse me’ before asking, and ‘Thank you’ after receiving directions. In English culture, it is also common to smile and make eye contact when asking for help.
