Grammar Explanation

1. Who (for people): Use “who” when referring to people. It can be the subject or object of the relative clause.
\nExample: The girl who is wearing a blue dress is my sister.
\nExample: The teacher who teaches us English is very kind.
\n\n
2. Which (for things and animals): Use “which” when referring to things, objects, or animals.
\nExample: The book which is on the table belongs to Ahmed.
\nExample: This is the computer which my father bought last week.
\n\n
3. That (for people, things, and animals): “That” can replace “who” or “which” in defining relative clauses. It is more common in everyday English.
\nExample: The house that is next to the mosque is very old. (= which)
\nExample: The man that lives next door is a doctor. (= who)
\n\n
4. Whose (for possession): Use “whose” to show possession (for people, animals, and sometimes things).
\nExample: The boy whose father is a pilot is in my class.
\nExample: This is the student whose bag was stolen.
\n\n
5. Defining vs Non-defining Relative Clauses:
\n- Defining (no commas): essential information — “The man who lives next door is a doctor.” (We need this info to know which man.)
\n- Non-defining (with commas): extra information — “My father, who is 50 years old, works in a hospital.” (We already know which father.)
