Articles (A, An, The) — Definite and Indefinite Articles — Rules, Usage and Practice — English 4th Year Middle School — Algerian Curriculum

Articles are small but important words in English. They come before nouns and tell us if we are talking about something specific or general. There are three articles in English: a, an (indefinite), and the (definite). Understanding how to use them correctly is essential for speaking and writing proper English.

Learning Objectives

  • \n

Grammar Explanation

\n\n

1. Indefinite Article “A”: Use “a” before singular countable nouns that begin with a consonant sound.
\nExamples: a book, a car, a university (pronounced “yoo-niversity”), a European country.
\nUse “a” when mentioning something for the first time or talking about one unspecified thing.

\n\n

2. Indefinite Article “An”: Use “an” before singular countable nouns that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
\nExamples: an apple, an elephant, an hour (silent “h”), an honest person.
\nImportant: it’s the SOUND that matters, not the spelling! For example: “an hour” (hour starts with a vowel sound) but “a house” (house starts with a consonant sound).

\n\n

3. Definite Article “The”: Use “the” for both singular and plural nouns when the listener knows which one we mean.
\nWe use “the” when: a) the noun has been mentioned before, b) there is only one (the sun, the moon, the world), c) it is clear from context (Close the door, please), d) with superlatives (the best, the tallest), e) with ordinal numbers (the first, the second), f) before unique things (the internet, the environment).

\n\n

4. Zero Article (No Article): We do NOT use an article with: a) plural countable nouns used generally (Cats are friendly animals), b) uncountable nouns used generally (Water is essential for life), c) proper nouns (Algeria, Ahmed, Monday), d) meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), e) sports and games (football, chess), f) school subjects (Mathematics, English).
