In English, we use different modal verbs to make requests depending on how polite we want to be. ‘Can’ is informal and used with friends: ‘Can you help me with my homework?’ ‘Could’ is more polite: ‘Could you open the window, please?’ ‘May’ is very formal: ‘May I come in?’ ‘Would’ is also polite: ‘Would you mind closing the door?’

\\n

To make offers, we say: ‘Can I help you?’ ‘Shall I carry your bag?’ ‘Would you like some tea?’ ‘Do you want me to open the window?’ For very polite offers in formal situations, use: ‘May I offer you something to drink?’

\\n

To respond to a request positively, say: ‘Yes, of course.’ ‘Sure.’ ‘Certainly.’ ‘No problem.’ ‘I’d be happy to.’ To refuse politely, say: ‘I’m sorry, I can’t.’ ‘I’d love to, but I’m busy.’ ‘I’m afraid I can’t right now.’

\\n

When someone offers you something, accept with: ‘Yes, please.’ ‘Thank you, that would be lovely.’ ‘That’s very kind of you.’ Refuse politely with: ‘No, thank you.’ ‘I’m fine, thanks.’ ‘Maybe later, thank you.’

\\n

Remember: In English culture, it is important to use polite expressions like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ with requests. A request without ‘please’ can sound rude, even with ‘could’ or ‘would’.
