Present Continuous Tense (Verb + ing) — English — 3rd Year Middle School — Algerian Curriculum

The Present Continuous tense (also called Present Progressive) is used to describe actions that are happening right now, at the moment of speaking. In this lesson, we will learn how to form and use the Present Continuous tense. This lesson is designed for third-year middle school students following the Algerian curriculum.

الشرح المبسط

What is Present Continuous? (ما هو زمن المضارع المستمر؟)

نستخدم زمن المضارع المستمر للتحدث عن:

• أحداث تحدث الآن (Actions happening now): I am reading a book. (أنا أقرأ كتاباً الآن)
• أحداث مؤقتة (Temporary situations): She is staying with her aunt this week. (هي تقيم عند خالتها هذا الأسبوع)
• خطط مستقبلية قريبة (Future arrangements): We are going to the cinema tomorrow. (نحن ذاهبون إلى السينما غداً)

Formation (التكوين):

Subject + am/is/are + Verb(-ing) + Complement

1. Affirmative (جملة مثبتة):

• I am (I’m) + verb-ing — I am (I’m) eating lunch.
• He/She/It is + verb-ing — She is studying English.
• You/We/They are + verb-ing — They are playing football.

2. Negative (جملة منفية): نضيف not بعد am/is/are

• I am not (I’m not) sleeping.
• He/She/It is not (isn’t) working.
• You/We/They are not (aren’t) listening.

3. Questions (أسئلة): نضع am/is/are قبل الفاعل

• Am I dreaming?
• Is she watching TV?
• Are you studying now?

قواعد إضافة -ing:

• معظم الأفعال: نضيف -ing مباشرة: read → reading, play → playing
• الأفعال المنتهية بـ e: نحذف e ونضيف -ing: write → writing, come → coming
• الأفعال المكونة من مقطع واحد (CVC): نضاعف الحرف الأخير ثم نضيف -ing: run → running, swim → swimming, sit → sitting

Present Simple vs Present Continuous:

• Present Simple: عادات وروتين وحقائق — I play tennis every Friday.
• Present Continuous: الآن، في هذه اللحظة — I am playing tennis now.

Example 1: Complete with the Present Continuous.

1. She ____ (read) a book. → She is reading a book.
2. They ____ (play) in the garden. → They are playing in the garden.
3. I ____ (write) a letter. → I am writing a letter.
4. He ____ (swim) in the pool. → He is swimming in the pool.

Example 2: Make the sentences negative.

1. She is cooking dinner. → She is not (isn’t) cooking dinner.
2. They are watching TV. → They are not (aren’t) watching TV.
3. I am listening to music. → I am not listening to music.

Example 3: Make questions.

1. you / study / now? → Are you studying now?
2. he / eat / lunch? → Is he eating lunch?
3. they / play / football? → Are they playing football?

1. اكتب الفعل بين قوسين في Present Continuous:
   a. The children ____ (play) in the park.
   b. My mother ____ (cook) dinner.
   c. I ____ (do) my homework now.
   d. We ____ (study) English this year.

2. صحّح الجمل التالية (حوّلها إلى Present Continuous حيثما دعت الحاجة):
   a. She reads a book right now.
   b. They play football at the moment.
   c. Listen! Someone sings in the next room.
3. حوّل الجمل إلى أسئلة:
   a. He is watching TV. → ____
   b. They are coming to the party. → ____
   c. She is sleeping. → ____
4. اختر الزمن الصحيح (Present Simple أو Present Continuous):
   a. She ____ (drinks / is drinking) coffee every morning.
   b. Look! It ____ (rains / is raining) outside.
   c. We ____ (go / are going) to school by bus every day.
   d. Be quiet! The baby ____ (sleeps / is sleeping).

نشاط منزلي

اجلس في غرفة المعيشة لمدة 5 دقائق. اكتب 5 جمل تصف ما يحدث الآن باستخدام Present Continuous. مثلاً: “My father is reading the newspaper. My sister is watching TV.”
